  • Advocating for early healthy lifestyle

History

The Northeast Florida Medical Society began its revitalized existence as a “Medical Section” component of the Florida/Jacksonville Medical Dental Association in 1994 at a Florida State Medical Association meeting in Orlando, Florida.

Florida / Jacksonville Medical Dental and Pharmaceutical Association was founded in 1896 as a minority physician, dentist and pharmacy organization for continuing medical education in the care of illnesses common in African Americans, primarily because of the very small numbers of allied health professionals. In 1960, only approximately sixty African American physicians, and a lesser number of allied professionals were practicing in Florida. The NEFMS section now constitutes the local affiliate organization of the National Medical Association (Washington, D.C.) and its state component-the Florida State Medical Association.

There are over one thousand African American physicians in Florida, with approximately 150 located in Northeast Florida, and they represent a fair number of specialty areas in institutional and private practices.

NMA: NATIONAL MEDICAL ASSOCIATION

The National Medical Association is the parent organization of the Northeast Florida Medical Society. The NMA promotes the collective interests of physicians and patients of African descent, carrying out this mission by serving as the collective voice of physicians of African descent and a leading force for parity in medicine, elimination of health disparities and promotion of optimal health.
